There’s a certain calm confidence that comes through when Amy Anaiz talks about hosting. It’s not rushed. It’s not performative. It’s grounded in feeling, ritual, and small details that quietly do the work for you.

A New York–based photographer and the founder of OZAIZ, Amy approaches gatherings the same way she approaches design and storytelling. With intention first, beauty second, and ease always in mind. From scent to drinkware to one signature moment that sets the tone, her philosophy is refreshingly simple and deeply considered.

Q: When planning a gathering, where do you start?

A: I always start with the occasion. It helps me understand the mood I want to create and how I want people to feel when they walk through the door.

From there, I move straight into the decor. I think about how to set the tone through small details that make the space feel inviting, like scent. This is where I bring in pieces that reflect who I am and how I want people to experience the moment. The menu and theme fall into place once the foundation feels right.

It keeps everything thoughtful, simple, and true to the experience I want to host.

Q: Your favorite way to break the ice with guests?

A: I like to break the ice with a simple cocktail or mocktail. I usually choose a recipe with one unexpected twist. It gives guests something to react to right away and opens the door for easy conversation.

It’s less about entertainment and more about helping people feel welcomed, curious, and ready to settle into the evening.

Q: If you had a limited budget, what would you focus on for the tablescape?

A: I’d focus on a tablescape that feels warm, simple, and intentional. You don’t need a lot. You just need pieces that work hard for you.

I’d start with a clean foundation. Fresh flowers from a local market. A neutral linen. Soft lighting.

Then I’d bring in OZAIZ. Our pieces are perfect when you’re working with a smaller budget because each one serves multiple roles. The carafe can hold water during dinner, then shift into a floral vase. Our tumbler can work as drinkware or as a candle vessel using our refills. The geo pillars add height and glow without needing extra styling.

This approach keeps the table thoughtful without feeling overdone. You get beauty, function, and a sense of ease.

Q: What makes a gathering truly memorable?

A: When people feel seen and cared for. It’s never about perfection. It’s the comfort, the conversation, and the small details that show intention.

Q: Advice for hosts who feel overwhelmed?

A: Keep it simple. You don’t need to do everything. Start with the feeling you want to create and let that guide your choices. Choose one easy dish you know you can execute well. Your friends are coming to spend time with you. If you can show up as yourself, the rest will fall into place.

Q: Your signature recipe for hosting?

A: My signature beverage is a Citrus Hibiscus Cocktail made with hibiscus, lemon, pomegranate, and chia seeds.

Q: What’s always playing in the background?

A: Omah Lay Radio on Spotify. It’s a playlist that’s updated constantly with the best Afrobeats.

Q: What’s your favorite party trick?

A: Creating one hero moment that does all the work for you.

For me, it’s a signature drink served in a beautiful vessel. I use the OZAIZ carafe because it turns a simple pour into an experience. I pick a flavor twist guests don’t expect. I pre-batch it so I’m not stuck mixing all night. I set it out with fresh garnish so people can build their own.

Q: What do you love most about Partytrick?

A: I love that Partytrick takes the pressure out of hosting. It gives you clear steps, smart ideas, and the confidence to pull off a gathering without overthinking every detail. My favorite feature is how customizable the plans are. You can take what fits your life, skip what doesn’t, and still end up with something that feels personal.

Q: What’s the most memorable gathering you’ve attended?

A: A friend’s 40th birthday in Tulum. She curated the entire weekend with so much care. Every evening had its own styled dinner setup.

Even though it was about celebrating her, she made each of us feel valued for being there. I left feeling appreciated, connected, and grateful.
