Sara Roberts is the founder of Goldie Home, a home brand specializing in table linens and pillows. Each piece begins as one of Sara’s original paintings, which are printed on 100% linen and transformed into vibrant, artful textiles in Portugal. She launched the brand four years ago during the pandemic as a way to merge her love of painting with her passion for gathering friends and family around the table. Based in NYC with her husband and two teenage children, Sara draws inspiration from abstract art, travel, and the everyday magic of city life.

Q: What are your go-to party activities or games to break the ice?

Most importantly, a great playlist is key. After dinner, it's always fun to have guests take turns DJ'ing. Cocktails are also a fun activity. A signature cocktail with some interesting ingredient or twist is always a good way to break the ice.

Q: What makes a great gathering memorable?

Great conversation, good drinks, fun music, and of course a beautifully set table.

Q: If someone is feeling overwhelmed by hosting their friends in their home, what tips would you give them?

Create mini areas where you want to host. For cocktails + appetizers, choose one area and set out glasses and food. For dinner, pre-set the table and prepare as much of the meal as possible in advance. Do as much as you can before guests arrive this way you can relax and be present and just enjoy. Think about the things that you love the most when you are hosted and focus on nailing those as a host yourself. Simplify your to-do list and focus on the essentials: drink, food, table, music. You got this!

Q: Favorite recipe or food to serve when hosting?

I do love mixing it up but a tried and true that never fails are dirty martinis and for the main meal I have been making this shrimp, zucchini, and pasta dish which is so good especially when paired with a salad and a big, fresh bread. It's easy, simple, and always delicious.

Q: What is the soundtrack to a dinner party in your home? Have any favorite playlists?

A mix of Everything but the Girl, Dido, Robyn, Morcheeba, Neil Young, Tracy Chapman, Buena Vista Social Club, and more... I am hosting friends Saturday night and this is exactly what I will play!

Q: What is your favorite partytrick?

Prep in advance, easy dishes, beautifully set table, and being a super relaxed host.

Q: What is the most memorable party or gathering you've attended or hosted?

I got to attend the opening of Fotografiska in Berlin two years ago and it was epic. Every floor was a different exhibition and fully immersive art experience with food and drinks everywhere. People with amazing style, cool conversations and dancing.
