Host How I Host: Julian Leaver on Letting the Occasion Lead Everything

Julian Leaver is the founder of Julian Leaver Events, a Dallas-based luxury wedding planning and design firm with a lead planner who is permanently based in Paris, a pairing that gives clients both American planning precision and true European fluency. After nearly three decades designing high-end, bespoke celebrations around the world, Julian’s approach to hosting at home mirrors his professional philosophy: gatherings should never be generic. They should feel anchored.

For Julian, the secret to a night people remember isn’t more food or more décor. It’s creating a mood so seamless that guests forget to check the time.

Hosting Q&A with Julian Leaver

Q: When planning a gathering in your home, where do you start?

A: The Occasion. Once I understand the moment I’m honoring, everything else follows: the menu, the décor, the theme. A celebration without a defined purpose risks feeling generic; when the occasion anchors the planning, every detail becomes intentional.

Q: What are your favorite ways to break the ice or entertain guests?

A: Music is everything. A well-curated playlist does more work than most people realize; it sets the energy the moment guests walk in and subtly guides the evening's pace. I put as much thought into the soundtrack as I do the table setting. When the music is right, guests don’t even notice it; they just feel good.

Q: If you had a limited budget, what would you focus on for the tablescape?

A: Candles.

With a limited budget, I’d put everything into candlelight. Nothing transforms a table or a room more affordably or dramatically. A mix of heights, a few interesting vessels, and the right warm glow make even the simplest setting feel intentional and considered. Everything else can be minimal; the candlelight does the heavy lifting.

Q: What makes a great gathering memorable?

A: The feeling that time stopped. A great gathering is memorable when guests lose track of the hour. When the conversation, the food, and the atmosphere all work together so seamlessly that no one wants to leave. The details matter, but what people carry with them is how the evening made them feel. That’s always the goal.

Q: If someone is feeling overwhelmed by hosting their friends in their home, what tips would you give them?

A: Start with one decision and let it lead.

Choose the occasion, commit to it, and let everything else follow from there. You don’t need to do everything; you need to do the right things. Scale back the menu, simplify the décor, but be intentional about what you keep. Guests don’t remember how many dishes were on the table; they remember how welcome they felt as they walked in. Focus your energy there first.

Q: What is your signature recipe to serve when hosting?

A: My go-to is always a well-built charcuterie board.

It’s effortless to assemble, endlessly customizable, and never fails to impress. The secret is in the layering: start with two or three cheeses at varying textures (a soft brie, an aged manchego, and a creamy gorgonzola are my favorites), then build around them with a mix of cured meats, honeycomb, marcona almonds, seasonal fruit, and a few good crackers. Fill every gap with something: cornichons, dried apricots, dark chocolate, until the board feels abundant. The goal is for it to look like it took more effort than it did, and it always does.

Q: What’s your go-to soundtrack for a dinner party at home?

A: Benetti House Bar.

Q: What is your favorite party trick?

A: Set the table the night before. It sounds simple, but it’s the single most effective thing you can do to show up as a relaxed, present host. When guests arrive, and the table is already dressed, the candles are ready to light, and the only thing left is pouring the drinks, everything feels effortless. And effortless is the ultimate luxury.

Q: What do you love about Partytrick? What’s your favorite Partytrick feature?

A: What I love most about Partytrick is that it closes the gap between inspiration and execution. As a planner, I see people collect ideas for years and never act on them. Partytrick removes that friction. The curated timelines are my favorite feature because in events, timing is everything.

Q: What is the most memorable party or gathering you’ve attended or hosted? Why?

A: My own wedding. As someone who has spent decades designing moments for others, I found something profound in finally being on the other side of it. All the details I pour into every event, the music, the light, the flow of the evening. I felt all of it as a guest in my own life for the first time. It reminded me why this work matters. That feeling is what I’m chasing for every client.

Q: What are your favorite products or brands to use when hosting?

A: Scully & Scully is always at the top of my list. Their craftsmanship feels genuinely timeless, and there’s something about setting a table with pieces that have real weight and intention. Beyond that, I’m drawn to things that feel collected rather than matched, layered textures, strong candles, and effortless linen. The curation matters more than the brand, but Scully & Scully always earns a place on my table.

Partytrick Take: Real Hosting Takeaways

Julian’s style proves that luxury isn’t about doing more. It’s about making a few smart, high-impact decisions early. Start with the occasion, let that guide the choices, and then build atmosphere through rhythm: light, music, and a flow that keeps guests comfortable enough to linger.

How can I recreate this hosting style in a simple way?

Pick one clear occasion (even if it’s just a welcome-back dinner or a midweek reset), then build the mood around it with two anchors: candlelight + a playlist. Keep everything else streamlined so you can actually enjoy your guests.

What is the most important planning decision behind this gathering?

Defining the purpose of the night. When the occasion arises, it becomes easier to choose the right menu, pacing, and atmosphere without spiraling into “should I do more?”

What can hosts borrow from this approach for their own event?

  • Decide the occasion first, then edit every choice through that lens.
  • Use candlelight as your instant upgrade, especially on a budget.
  • Treat your playlist like part of the tablescape. It sets the tone before anyone sits down.
  • Prep the table the night before so you can be present when guests arrive.
