If you’ve ever found yourself spiraling in the “Should I start with the menu or the decor?” question, Lorinda Constant has a grounding answer: start with the occasion, then let the season do the rest. As the founder of Sweet Talk Floral, Lorinda builds distinct floral narratives for celebrations across New England (and beyond), drawing inspiration from art, culture, and travel.

Her approach to hosting is the same as her approach to florals: begin with meaning, then build texture, color, and scent around what you’re celebrating so guests feel cared for, relaxed, and fully present.

Hosting Q&A with Lorinda Constant

Q: When planning a gathering in your home, where do you start? The menu, the decor, the occasion, or the theme?

A: The occasion is my guiding light, with the season being a huge factor too. I pinpoint specifics based on the guest of honor or the holiday—and that helps me dig deeper into the color palette, texture, scent, and all the little details.

Q: What are your favorite ways to break the ice or entertain guests?

A: Music is such an important element to any event, big or small. On RSVPs, I love including a space for guests to write in a favorite song to include in our playlist. We’ll usually hear an enthusiastic “this was mine!” which kickstarts some great conversations.

Q: If you had a limited budget for a small dinner party, what would you focus on for the tablescape?

A: I love an eclectic mix of objects you can source from your own home: vintage candlesticks, found objects from your travels, and local farm flowers. It warms up any tablescape and becomes a great talking point.

Q: What makes a great gathering memorable?

A: Great food and even better conversation. Letting your guests feel completely taken care of and at ease. A room full of laughter.

Q: If someone is feeling overwhelmed about hosting friends at home, what tips would you give them?

A: Don’t feel like you have to overdo it. Think about what you want the night to feel like, and base your priorities around that. In my opinion, good food + good wine equals happy guests.

Q: What’s your signature recipe (food or beverage) to serve when hosting?

A: Lillet is a staple in our household, so a French Blonde is always on the menu. This recipe from Cookie + Kate is our go-to.

Q: What’s your go-to soundtrack for a dinner party at home?

A: I’m extremely lucky to have a close friend who is also a stellar DJ—Kristine Barilli. Whenever I need something curated to fit a mood, I check out her Spotify playlists (from 90’s house to 70’s disco to 60’s lounge).

She also made a playlist for Sweet Talk, which you can find here

Q: What’s your favorite party trick?

A: Have snacks ready in every room and let people mill about. Light up the patio with candles and soft lighting so people can grab some fresh air. Have a drink and make sure to breathe—enjoy the evening.

Q: What do you love about Partytrick? What’s your favorite feature?

A: A template for every occasion. It makes hosting a no-brainer, even for seasoned pros. The step-by-step instructions save me from hours searching on Pinterest—there’s nothing like it.

Q: What’s the most memorable party or gathering you’ve attended or hosted? Why?

A: My wedding. My brother generously let us use his 25-acre property in the woods of New Hampshire. Guests came from all over the country—many had never been to my home state. We transformed his 19th-century barn, apple fields, and pond into a chic garden oasis. We brought in a farm-to-table restaurant from Vermont with a grazing table the guests are still raving about 10 years later. The best part was being on our own timeline—people perused the property, eating and drinking at their leisure. We danced the night away and ended the evening with a huge bonfire. Truly the best party I have ever attended.

Q: What are your favorite products or brands to use when hosting?

A: Eclectic patterned plates from Ginori 1735, Hawkins New York colored glassware, and any funky flowers you can find.

Partytrick Take: Real Hosting Takeaways

Lorinda’s gatherings are a masterclass in planning with intention: start with meaning, let the season do the heavy lifting, then use a few smart touchpoints—music, lighting, and easy food—to create flow.

How can I recreate this hosting style in a simple way?

Choose one “occasion anchor” (a reason, a person, a season) and build around it with a tight palette.

Then add one conversational detail—like a guest-submitted playlist—and keep the rest relaxed.

What is the most important planning decision behind this gathering?

Deciding what the night is for (and what you want it to feel like).

Once you name that, everything else gets easier: the colors, the flowers, the scents, the lighting, the menu, even the pace of the evening.

What can hosts borrow from this approach for their own event?

  • Start with the occasion + season to narrow decisions fast.
  • Pull objects from around your home (and travel finds) for an eclectic, personal tablescape.
  • Ask guests for one favorite song on the RSVP to spark easy conversation.
  • Set snacks in multiple spots so guests can wander and settle in.
