How to do Dry January

Suddenly, you see all that you are doing this month

Grüvi: The mocktail brand trailblazing a new way to live and socialize with alcohol-free beverages. Making every moment more Grüvi.

The holidays have passed and the New Year is officially rolling. Whether you land in the “New you” boat or opt for the “Why change?” vessel, there’s a chance you’ve toyed with trying out Dry January. We love ourselves a cocktail - and we also recognize the TLC we can do for our health if we venture into mocktails from time to time. Which is why we invited a few experts in to share insight on how to do Dry January. The team at Grüvi knows a thing or two about sticking it out for the first 31 days of the year… and even beyond that if you dare. Here are a few of their top tips for Dry January, especially when you’re a rookie.

1. BYONA (Bring your own N.A)

Showing up at a social gathering empty-handed is an easy way to make sticking to your Dry January goal very difficult. Because you can’t guarantee that there will be non-alcoholic alternatives on hand, it’s best to stock up ahead of time and bring your own.

But going booze-free doesn’t have to be boring. With a massive selection of zero-proof options on the market, from NA craft beers to 0% wines, you’ll hardly remember that what’s in your cup isn’t alcohol. Shoot, you may even get questions about how your drink is tastier than all the rest. At which point you get to enlighten them.

2. Keep Your Cheerleaders on Speed Dial

Support is crucial, and community is key! Even if it's just for 31 days in Dry January, it's important to have people on your side. Whether they are teammates joining in on the challenge, or cheerleaders who support you in every single phase of life, make sure you have the right people on speed dial for those dicey moments.

If you don't feel you have anyone IRL to call, you can lean on the online sober community for support with pages like No Booze Babes, Sober Sis, Ditched the Drink, and Join Soberish.

3. Bubble Bath feat. Bubbles: The Grüvi Dry Secco Kind

Getting back into your groove after a long holiday break can be stressful, which is why we always encourage focusing on self-care during the first month of the year. One of our favorite ways to unwind is by taking a long hot bath while sipping a glass of alcohol-free sparkling wine. The Grüvi Dry Secco is an excellent low-sugar, single-serving option. Bubbles + Bubbles = Weeknight Bliss. Or any night really… catch us there every night possible.

4. Remember Your “Why”

Think ahead. Think about your long-term goals (even if long-term just means 31 days from now). Remember your reason why! Why are you taking this break in the first place? What's the big picture?

5. Mindfulness Walk with a Mocha Nitro Stout

While there will always be a time and place for the iconic hot girl walk, we’ve recently discovered the grounding effects of slow, quiet walks in nature. Leave your phone at home and bring something delicious to sip on while you take in the sights and sounds around you. Our current favorite walking beverage is a creamy non-alcoholic Mocha Nitro Stout from Grüvi.

6. Cook Dinner While Sipping Sangria

There are few things a nourishing, home-cooked meal can’t fix. Even if you’re a newbie in the kitchen, this is a great opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and try a new recipe. Plus, something as simple as making dinner becomes an experience when you do it with a delicious bev in hand. Try the Gold-Medal winning Grüvi Sangria, which is non-alcoholic and low calorie.

7. A Great Book Paired with a Dry Red Blend

Skip the Netflix binge for a night and curl up in a cozy spot with an enlightening read and a glass of zero-proof red wine, like the Dry Red Blend from Grüvi. This award-winning wine tastes like the real deal.  If you find that you struggle to fall asleep at night, you might be surprised by how quickly the z’s hit when you start cutting back on screen time in the evenings. Plus, what if this Dry January version of you added a reading list to the new year’s docket?

8. Journal Your Journey

Using a journal to reflect on your decision to try Dry January and keeping track of your experiences throughout the month can keep you focused on your personal goals and make you more aware of the positive impacts of cutting back on drinking. Plus, you can play it up with a title of your choosing. Think: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Mocktail Edition or Sisterhood of the Zero-Proof Cup. Embrace an alter ego for your 31 days and see where it takes you!

How to Stay Sober for 31 Days: A Dry January Cheat Sheet

Just like that, your Dry January can become a whole lot more of a bucket list month of feel-good things for you to do, rather than focusing on what you aren’t doing. We believe in you! Make this month one you’ll look back on next year and want to repeat for a sequel. Cheers! The N.A. kind, of course.
